Uncle Sam Needs You, and You

To the Editor:

Having served four years in the United States Army, I am aware that recruiting is one of the biggest challenges the military faces today (front page, Sept. 27). But recruitment is not the only problem. Today's
military is not doing the job it needs to do in the way of retention, which is just as important, if not more so, than recruiting.

The root of the problem with retention is that the military leadership and the Administration do not realize the toll they are taking on active-duty
personnel with today's political atmosphere. The military is rife with enforced political correctness. It also seems as if large numbers of Americans are being too frequently deployed to some part of the world
in which our country has little interest.
